THE FIRST BOOK PUBLISHED IN IBIZA
Two sheets history, or other features of the latest conquest of Ibiza’ Cool names. Classens de Jongte is the title of the first book published in Ibiza, en 1858, and now published as a facsimile with an explanatory introduction by Felip Cirer, director of the Encyclopedia of Ibiza and Formentera.
The edition of this first book is linked to the history of printing and journalism on our island., As, following the acquisition of a printing press in Valencia by the lawyer and landowner Josep Ferrer Cirer, Ibiza's first periodical publication was printed, the weekly newspaper 'El Ebusitano’ (1846-1848).
This edition has been possible thanks to the donation made to the Consell d'Eivissa for Salvadora Marí and Alfons Marí Ninet of an original copy of the work, which has since been preserved in the Insular Public Library of Eivissa. The edition has been completed with the other original preserved on the island, which is in the Historical Archive of Ibiza, missing some pages. There is evidence, Además, of the existence of two more copies of the original book in the National Library and in the Library of Catalonia.
